The chip is passive, so it doesn't need a battery – the code is read when you turn the key in the ignition. The transponder is not visible from the outside of the key.  If the transponder chip is broken, unprogrammed, or missing, the engine won't start.  Almost 95% of new vehicles sold in the U.S.A. are equipped with this transponder technology.
